Home Remedies for Vertigo

Damage to the inner ear’s posterior semi-circular canal is the reason for the balance disorder known as vertigo. It creates a misconception that a person is spinning and causes unexpected giddiness. Vomiting, nausea, spells of dizziness and balance loss are among the symptoms of vertigo. Migraines, neck or head trauma, pressure of fluids in the inner ear or viral infection can result in vertigo. Here are some home remedies for vertigo that can help you treat this disorder.

Change Your Lifestyle to Relieve Vertigo

1. Good Sleep

Vertigo symptoms are likely to appear if you are not sleeping properly at night. Therefore, having a nighttime sleep of around 8 hours is extremely important. Going to bed at a particular time every night and sticking to a set daily routine can help you ensure that you sleep properly at night.

2. Balanced Diets

Consuming a balanced diet that includes foods rich in vitamins and proteins is one of the best home remedies for vertigo. The symptoms of dizziness can be avoided by adding lemon rind to the salad. It is best to exclude fried foods, caffeine, excess salts and chocolates from your diet. Refraining from smoking and drinking alcohol is also necessary for vertigo patients as they are known to aggravate its symptoms.

3. Slow Moves

For vertigo patients, getting up in stages is very necessary after waking up in the morning. Start by sitting up in bed before setting your feet down on the ground. Don’t stand up without relaxing yourself or in a hurry.

Flex your legs before standing from a chair as it reduces light-headedness by getting the circulation in the body going.

Take Natural Remedies to Relieve Vertigo

1. Ginger

Ginger is an excellent natural home remedy for vertigo, especially when you are experiencing nausea. Studies suggest that ginger is very effective in ceasing dizziness. Drinking ginger tea twice a day can help in minimizing the vertigo symptoms. It is important to consult your doctor before using ginger as it might interfere with anti-diabetics, anticoagulants and blood pressure drugs.

2. Gingko Biloba

Gingko biloba is a tree that has been used for many medicinal purposes. It is among the best home remedies for vertigo that can enhance the blood circulation inside the inner ear, thereby improving some of the inner ear issues. Gingko biloba comes in the form of dried leaf, tablet and as a liquid extract. The symptoms of vertigo can be alleviated by daily consumption of an herbal tea prepared with gingko.

3. Almonds and Pumpkin Seeds

Mix some pumpkin seeds and a dozen almonds with around 3 tablespoons of wheat. Soak this mixture in water overnight and then turn it into a paste by finely grinding it. Add cloves and then boil the paste with milk. Sugar can be added to the paste to enhance its taste. Use this paste for around a week and you will experience alleviation in the vertigo symptoms.

4. Water and Juices

Vertigo can be treated effectively using liquids too and they are proved to be excellent vertigo home remedies. It is important that you drink a good amount of fresh fruit juice and water on a consistent basis as you might get dizzy, feel faint or lightheaded if you are dehydrated.

Do Exercises to Relieve Vertigo

You can do the following exercises to cope with vertigo at home.

1. Semont Maneuver

Start by remaining in a sitting position and then lying down on the right side. Make sure to turn the head left and face the ceiling when lying down. Maintain the position until vertigo is over. Now sit up QUICKLY and lie down on the left side keeping your head positioned over the left shoulder during the movement. You must face the ground at the end so don’t try to turn your head. Maintain the position until vertigo is over and then sit up.

It is slightly difficulty for old people to perform this maneuver as it requires speed but not too much neck flexibility.

2. Half Somersault Maneuver

Look up at the ceiling while kneeling down for a few seconds.

Lower your head to the floor and tuck your chin, so that your head goes towards the knees. Wait for about 30 seconds for the vertigo to pass.

Turn your head in the affected ear’s direction (i.e. turn towards the left elbow if you are feeling dizzy on your left side). Maintain the position for 30 seconds.

While remaining on all fours, raise your head quickly, leveling it with your back. Position you head at a 45-degree angle. Maintain the position for 30 seconds.

Keeping the head turned to the shoulder of the affected side, raise your head quickly to make it fully upright and then stand up slowly.

3. Brandt-Daroff Exercises

Sit upright on the side of the bed with the feet dangling. With the head turned to the left, lie down on the right side with the right ear against the bed. The BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) particles in the semicircular canal are brought up to about half way around the canal bend. Sit up to send the particles fall back to their original position. Now lie down on the left side with the left ear turned to the right or against the bed. This stimulates symptoms in left side of BPPV but does not affect particles in the right side as the canal is in a horizontal position.

When to See a Doctor

If you are experiencing fresh vertigo episodes that are accompanied with obvious complications such as headaches, then you must see a doctor. If mild vertigo does not go after a few days, then again it is best to call your doctor.
